I'm quite a fan of proper pyjama dressing (see
this fantastic collage on Discotheque Confusion-- bonus points for the Jeeves and Wooster still), and my love for well-styled, well-cut pyjamas has only expanded after seeing photos from this past NYFW. I have especially been pleased by the appearance of simple, feminine but not girly bed jackets as outerwear. While they don't seem too practical in their intended incarnation, I'm very much into the way they add just a little bit of easy old Hollywood glamour to most outfits. Plus, they're all you find in antique shops when going through the lingerie basket so a good one shouldn't be hard to find. I am also increasingly interested in the bed jacket's more useful and less forgotten counterparts, the chic kimono, the silky dressing gown and the velvety embroidered lounge coat (in other words, surprise surprise, anything that looks like jackets and coats from the late 1910s and the 1920s).
I'm not sure yet how or if I will introduce such garments in my wardrobe, but I am currently contenting myself by reaching out for my flowy silk and rayon shirts and pairing them with my black jersey skirt, a much more playful (and comfortable!) look than what I usually go for. I particularly enjoy when I get into something apparently new, and then realise I can reproduce and reinterpret it with what I already own -- even though it took me writing this post to see it in this case!

you're right... i think it's very old hollywood, and I didn't think about that before you said it. It's also very glamorous. I remember In the middle of bohemia in 2005 or whenever Sienna used to run around in jeans, a singlet and an old kimono and it all just looked so glamorous.

ReplyDeleteHannah-Rose: I don't think I ever really got over that bohemia period haha! I find that, as you said, it has this very glamourous side which is also very easily attainable. In a way, I think it has the same appeal as the more minimalistic tendencies of these days, since both have their roots in being and looking 'easy', don't you think? x
