After reading about these photos on
Victoire yesterday, I couldn't take them out of my mind. It's that seeing
colour photographs from an era (1939-1943) where it was an uncommon practice that are showing daily life subjects gives me a complete new image of what life was like at the time. Colour brings out textures and facial expressions in a real, almost crude way; what black and white photos forgive, colour enhances. All photos were taken by the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information. You can find the whole series
here.
So glad you are as obsessed with these pictures as much as we are! I cannot stop looking at them, and I really stare at each one forever, taking in all the details that the colour photographs enhance! It's just so amazing to see the clothing in colour now...Anuyways, glad you like them too!!
ReplyDeleteThese are great. Colour makes you see things differently.
ReplyDeleteMadelene: Yes, I was especially surprised by the train workers' (9) detailed attention to their appearance. If you look closely, most of them are wearing nail polish, earrings and a little makeup, while their uniforms and hands are stained by the coal.
